An Old Fashioned is the simplest serious cocktail: whiskey, a little sugar, bitters and a citrus peel, stirred with ice and served in a rocks glass. There is nowhere for a weak ingredient to hide, which is why small changes show up so clearly in the glass.
The classic formula is 2 oz whiskey, about ¼ oz rich syrup (or one sugar cube), 2 to 3 dashes of bitters and a strip of orange peel. Stir with ice for about 30 seconds, strain over one large cube and squeeze the peel over the top. Every recipe on this page is a variation on that frame, built with the same builder you can use to make your own.
Pick a whiskey, dial in the sweetener, bitters, peel and smoke, and watch the drink come together.
